Duo Service Newbuild Ferries
01 Jul 2006
Two exhibitors at Seawork 2006 are responsible for power and propulsion on sister ships Mercuria and Sapele, which have recently entered service on London's River Thames.
The 35m passenger ferries were built for Circular Cruises - Westminster, a joint venture between Crown River Cruises and Westminster Party Boats, by Tinnemans BV of Maasbracht in the Netherlands to a design by consultant naval architect Bill Williamson.
Built to MCA Class 5 to carry up o 250 passengers each, the 280 ton vessels will ferry passengers between Westminster and St Katherine's Dock seven days a week, stopping at other piers along the route.
Each vessel is powered by twin 8.1 litre Doosan Daewoo LO86TIH marine diesels, producing 285bhp at 2,100rpm, driving HRP 3111WM azimuthing propulsion units with 1,050mm diameter open propellers direct from the flywheel via a cardan shaft.
In each vessel's engine room are a pair of Doosan Daewoo DB33 3.3 litre engines driving Mecc Altee 30kVA, 24kW three phase, 50Hz at 1,500rpm marine genets and a Doosan Daewoo DB58, 5.8 litre engine developing 87bhp at 1,800rpm driving a hydraulic power pack for the KT90 bow thruster supplied by Kort Propulsion, UK agents for HRP thrusters systems.
All engines include double skin fuel injection lines, insulated return marine electrics and keel cooling.
Devon based WaterMota Ltd, UK agents for Dossan Daewoo engines, and Kent based Kort Propulsion, both exhibitors at last month's Seawork exhibition in Southampton, are ideally placed to provide local servicing on the Thames for the new vessels.
