Dutch Consortium Wins Sohar Phase 3
01 Jul 2006
A consortium of Interbeton, Six Construct, and Van Oord has been awarded the 195m contract for the construction of quay walls and dredging (Phase 3) at Sohar Port in Oman. The client is the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Government of Oman.
Interbeton is the international operating company of Royal BAM Group from the Netherlands (and has a 27.5% share in the contract), Six Construct, the international division of the Belgian Group BESIX (27.5%) and Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors from the Netherlands (45%).
The project consists of the extension of the existing quay wall by a further 1.9km for various industries which are currently being developed in the port, a 500m long service quay and 21 million cubic metres of dredging.
Dredging and reclamation activities will deepen the port to -18m, to allow for the largest container, cargo and other vessels to call at the port. The huge volumes of dredging will be utilised to reclaim land for the future container terminal, which is planned along the inside face of the northern breakwater.
Overall completion is slated for October 2008.
The consultants on the project are Ibn Khaldun, in association with Halcrow. Management of Sohar Industrial Port is by Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC) in a 50/50 joint venture of the Government of Oman and the Port of Rotterdam.
