ICE Plans Marine Renewables Conference for September

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has teamed with the International Association of Hydraulic Engineers to plan a Marine Renewable Energy Conference which will take place on 21 September at the London Stock Exchange. The event will bring together experts in the field to review the latest developments and consider the challenges ahead.

Announcing the event, David Kerr, chairman of the ICE's Energy Board said, 'The UK has the best wave and tidal resource in Europe, an asset which could potentially provide up to 20% of the UK's electrical power. There is now a renewed drive to realise this potential and this conference comes at a time when significant progress is beginning to be made.'

Topics to be discussed at the Conference include UK marine energy strategy, environmental and financial aspects of marine energy, developments and projects in both tidal and wave power.

Confirmed speakers include Gary Shanahan, Assistant Director for Bioenergy and Marine Renewables at the Department of Trade and Industry; Neil Kermode, managing director of the European Marine Energy Centre;

Roger Abraham, executive director of Halcrow Water; and Dr Richard Yemm, managing director of Ocean Power Delivery. There will also be a timely presentation by Professor Peter Fraenkel, technical director of Marine Current Turbines, whose company is scheduled to install the first commercial prototype of its SeaGen tidal energy device in Northern Ireland's Strangford Lough in September, supplying electricity to some 800 homes.
