Dredging

A Good Year for Van Oord

Dutch dredging contractor Van Oord has been awarded two maintenance dredging contracts in northern Germany by clients Wasser und Schiffahrtsamt and the Hamburg Port Authority. The combined value of the projects is some 7m.

The projects involve a one year maintenance contract for the River Suderelbe near Wischafen and another maintenance project on the River Stromelbe near Hamburg. The water injection dredgers Njord and Jetsed and the trailing suction hopper dredger Geopotes 15 will be deployed.

Van Oord has also been awarded a contract to design and build a 4km long quaywall at Dubai Maritime City for client Nakheel. Van Oord will execute the project, which has a total value of 102m and will be completed next year, in joint venture with the Belgian company Besix.

The backhoe dredger IJzeren Hein and the split hopper barge Seine will be deployed for rock supply and placement while the trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 310 will supply fill for behind the quaywall.

Van Oord's results for 2005 were in line with those of the other major international contractors. Profits more than doubled to 42m on a turnover up substantially to 1bn. Plant occupancy and profit margins also improved and a record high order book of 3,564m promises even better results for this year.
