IADC/CEDA Environmental Dredging Seminar
01 Jun 2006
The IADC/CEDA Seminar on Environmental Aspects of Dredging will be presented for the second time by the Delft University of Technology Post Graduate Academic Programme (TU Delft PAO) on 6 and 7 November this year in the Netherlands. The two day international seminar is based on the successful seven part series of IADC/CEDA Guides, which will be included in the course materials.
The lectures will be given by internationally known experts Nick Bray of Dredging Research Ltd in the UK and Gerard van Raalte of Hydronamic in the Netherlands.
Both are long term members of CEDA's Environmental Steering Committee.
Dredging is an essential human activity which, in the right circumstances, may also be a useful tool for remedying the results of past environmental interference. However, the very act of dredging and placing dredged material is an environmental impact.
It is therefore of the utmost importance that we should be able to determine whether any planned dredging will have a positive or negative impact on the environment. Evaluation of environmental impact should examine both short and long term effects as well as the sustainability of the altered environment.
Besides presentations on these themes, participants will be challenged in case studies to apply the principles discussed in order to get a full understanding of the scope and importance of the environmental aspects of dredging projects, the management of dredged material and the effects of environmental guidelines.
Gerard van Raalte said, 'For a responsible planning and execution of environmentally sensitive dredging projects, a thorough understanding of all aspects of an integral approach is essential.
This course provides a sufficiently detailed insight into all perspectives of the different stakeholders in such projects. Active participation in realistic case studies will assist the participant in his role as dedicated contributor to a sustainable development of dredging related projects.'
The seminar is aimed at consultants in dredging related industries and professionals from different governmental bodies, whether municipalities, district water boards, port and harbour authorities, or central government.
