Malta Eases into VTMIS Phase 2

Transas Ltd has signed a contract to provide Phase 2 of the Malta Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) project at a ceremony in Valletta. The contract is considered of national strategic importance for the Government of Malta and represents a significant financial investment in marine coastal surveillance.
The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and is a major advance towards implementation of the Trans-European transport network infrastructure, which is one of the Community's objectives for developing competitiveness and growth in Europe.
The Phase 2 VTMIS will provide a 24/7 service significantly enhancing the surveillance and monitoring capabilities available to Malta Maritime Authority (MMA) and the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM). It will expand the port VTS delivered under Phase 1 into a full coastal VTMIS that will help the MMA to regulate and control navigation and enhance both the management of shipping and the safety of navigation for port users. The system is also designed to support the AFM in their SAR operations and border monitoring/ control. Other system requirements are to support the assessment of risks, to improve the decision making process regarding safety of navigation, to protect the marine environment and expedite port/border security.
The preliminary scope of supply includes a minimum of four high performance coastal surveillance radars, four radio direction finders, an AIS base station network, SafeSeaNet (SSN), a central control room at the AFM National Operations Centre and other associated equipment.
The system includes the latest Transas Navi-Harbour software and the powerful ORS3 radar processor.
