Seaboard Sets Sailing Club's Foundations
01 Jun 2006
Marine civil engineering contractors Seaboard Limited has carried out a much needed facelift for a tired concrete waterfront in Chichester Harbour UK.
Working closely with Seawork exhibitors Walcon Marine, which designed and supplied all materials for the project, Seaboard has constructed a 200m 2hardwood decked stage, slipway, and two pontoon arms for the popular Emsworth Sailing Club.
Works involved 32 greenheart piles driven precisely for visual effect and integrity, to which two levels of hardwood cross beams were fixed to support the expansive decked area.
Although early difficulties were encountered with the foundations of a former seawater swimming pool, they were soon removed. Piling proceeded and the skeleton of the structure took shape.
Problems posed by working in a shallow tidal environment were overcome by using a tele-handler type forklift from the quayside for pitching the 7m piles and placing the vibro-hammer.
The interface of the works to the existing undulating quay was formed by planing any high spots in the concrete and re-screeding locally to eliminate trip hazards.
Emsworth Sailing Club has progressively used the jetty as each section was completed so their busy spring sailing calendar has not been hindered.
The new quayside and pontoons are to be named after the famous former Emsworth Sailing Club member Sir Peter Blake KBE and the opening ceremony will be carried out by his wife, Lady Pippa Blake.
Seaboard Limited, based in Chichester Harbour, operate the powerful multicat barge 'Seaboard Constructor' and carries out all aspects of marine civil engineering works along the UK South Coast.
