Evacuation System Debut in Frozen Fjord

Denmark's Viking Life-Saving Equipment launched its new evacuation liferaft system in the middle of a snowstorm in a freezing Norwegian fjord in March under the watchful eye of Norwegian maritime authorities. The new mini-slide system had been integrated into the newbuild ro-ro passenger vessel M/F Lote for ferry operators Fjord 1 at the Fiskerstrand Verft shipyard.

Viking designed the new slide as an alternative to their own still popular VEMS (Viking Evacuation MiniSlide System), to be an even more flexible means of evacuation from middle and low embarkation height passenger vessels.

The new MiniSlide System is set apart by two new design features; the brake cushion system designed to make descent safer and easier, and the new single bowsing technology. Coupled with a super high capacity 150 person liferaft, M/F Lote has been equipped with a cutting edge slide based evacuation system.

The new brake cushion system gives evacuees a clear stopping point at the bottom of the slide and a soft stop at the interface with the liferaft. A clear, effective and safe stopping point should be reassuring to evacuees at the top of the evacuation slide and increase clearance efficiency at the base.

The single bowsing line technology means that only one crew member is needed to position the liferaft, freeing other crew members to attend to other evacuation duties. One winch creates the correct pull in just the right places to ensure the liferaft is swiftly, safely and easily pulled into place ready for evacuation.

The high capacity 150 person liferaft integrated into this evacuation system reduces the space needed to store the required evacuation capacity on board the ship. The largest inflatable Viking system liferaft thus far, it is available with or without canopy to suit both open sea and protected water applications.
