Pepe Launch New Catfish Alloy Catamaran

Hayling Island based UK aluminium boat builders Catfish Boats have just launched Southern Star a 33ft (10m) LOA Catfish Aluminium Sports Fishing Catamaran. Southern Star was built by Pepe for charter angling and corporate duties and is owned and operated by Lymington based Greg Woodford.

Southern Star which will be on the floating pontoon at Seawork 2006, is very similar to Shogun, seen here.

Southern Star is the second generation of the CatFish Sports Fishing models, the first being Shogun, a 38ft model which launched the CatFish range at Seawork in 2004.

Southern Star is fitted with a pair of Caterpillar 3126 355bhp diesel engines driving Clements Engineering Hyperform Propellers through Twin Disc 5061 2:1 reduction gearboxes. This gives the vessel a cruising speed of 16 to18 knots with sprint speeds in excess of 23 knots.

The new layout includes a full walk-around island wheelhouse giving an impressive 90ft of fishing space yet still keeping the Mediterranean Sports look that so many people now desire, part of which is the full length Fly-Bridge with dual station controls and seating for up to six people.

The high levels of equipment continue, with the latest array of navigational electronics from Navman and Raymarine offering the most up to date of systems incorporating full colour deck cameras and satellite photography navigation.

There is seating and sleeping accommodation along with all of the usual creature comforts such as heated cabin and wheelhouse, enclosed heads with sea toilet and shower, hot & cold running water and full size galley, microwave, DVD and LCD TV.

Pepe offer craft at nearly any stage of completion from hull only right up to fully fitted out. The company is not constrained by moulds, which means that the client can have a much greater input on how the finished boat should look and the layout required. Also, each subsequent boat can easily be updated so each new purchaser can benefit from incorporation of the latest and most innovative ideas.

The Catfish catamaran hull shape is easily driven and this, combined with the low weight and immense strength of aluminium, allows the craft to achieve greater speeds with lesser horsepower, thus giving savings in both fuel usage and initial costs of power units. The design has proven to be an accomplished sea boat with no slamming in heavy seas and little or no roll at anchor in short seas, thus affording a great deal of comfort to skipper and crew alike.

Work is currently underway on Pepe's latest project, which is a 38ft by 16ft 6in charter dive boat for Pete Gough, who will be replacing his current Bullet 38 Beowulf operating from Poole harbour. Beowulf II will also be fitted with a pair of Caterpillar 3126 355hp Diesels which will give a loaded cruising speed of 18 knots while carrying up to 12 divers and two crew. Look out for this one at Seawork 2007!
