Local Consortium Use Modern Skills to Perform Classical Refit

Earlier this year the Irish Government's 32m sail training vessel Asgard II was brought to the Brooke Marine Facility at Lowestoft for an extensive refit ahead of its busy season of summer voyages.

Asgard II has been completely refitted in time for the summer sailing season.

A local consortium was formed to tender for the work, led by Great Yarmouth based marine electrical engineers E-Tech Group Ltd. The consortium consisted of a group of companies who had the range of skills required to carry out an extensive refit of a classical wooden sailing brigantine.

All the Asgard II's rigging and masts were removed before the boat was lifted from the water. All paintwork, the teak decks, woodwork and fittings were then lovingly restored to top condition.

Asgard II has been in service since 1981, replacing as it did the Asgard I, which was retired after nearly 70 years in service. During its time, it has hosted many thousands of sailing enthusiasts and training schools, all of whom have maintained the vessel in pristine condition during their voyager.

By far the largest part of the refit was a complete overhaul of the electrical system and generators. This was undertaken by the E-Tech Group, who ensured the refit was carried out in keeping with old traditions, many of which have no place on the modern vessels on which the company also works. E-Tech also fits out many newbuild luxury super yachts in the UK and throughout the Mediterranean.

However, the company has the skills to address both luxury newbuilds and classical refits.

The E-Tech Group also was responsible for the electrical installation of the vintage paddle steamer Waverley, which was refitted in Great Yarmouth several years ago.
