Muhlhan Surface Protection Ltd used the Skyjack TK46 booms to apply special protective coatings to the vessel, which operates between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight in the UK.

The knuckle booms enabled them to gain easy outreach over the low flat deck, and they have proven to be even more versatile when working on vessels that have not been raised from the dockside. The bend in the knuckle of the booms lets the operator work below ground level to reach vessels in dry dock from above.

AFI is one of a small number of powered access rental companies to have knuckle booms in its rental fleet. The company's Skyjack TK46 and TK66 booms can work at depths of 18 to 37 feet.

AFI corporate development director Nick Selley said, 'We have a number of knuckle booms in our fleet and they are much in demand for specialist access requirements, particularly for reaching out and down from the side of a dock, where they really come into their own.'
