Record Rescue Year for RNLI

Search and rescue statistics published last month by the UK's Royal National Lifeboat Institution show that 2005 was the busiest year on record, with RNLI lifeboat launches up 8% to 8,273.

Launches in the southwest of England and Wales doubled the national trend, up 16% and 15% respectively. It is not surprising that these areas are the RNLI's busiest as the UK's rapidly expanding pleasure boat population is most concentrated there. Some 68% of the people rescued last year were rescued from pleasure craft, with Poole's lifeboat station the busiest in the country with 147 launches rescuing 145 people.

Lifeboat launches in June, July and August accounted for 47% of the year's total, again reflecting the concentrated presence of leisure mariners and other forms of seasonal coastal recreation. Regularly monitoring activity and analysing incidents allows the RNLI to plan the deployment of lifeboats and other resources to meet future needs as sea and coastal use trends develop.

The RNLI is also able to target its Sea Safety education initiatives at beach goers and the boating and fishing communities to prevent incidents from happening. These programmes focus on making sea users aware of risks and dangers before they can become statistics.
