Norwegian ETV Will Be the First Towing Vessel to Use LNG

Norwegian shipbuilder Myklebust Verft of Gursken has been awarded a contract by Remoy Management, operators of vessels for the Norwegian Coastguard, for a sophisticated Emergency Response Vessel capable of towage and rescue operations. Delivery is scheduled for December 2007 and an option is also in place for one further vessel of the same type.

The design, designated VS 794 CGV, was entrusted to Vik-Sandvik of Fitjar, Norway and has been developed in close cooperation between the owner and the shipyard. It is believed that the craft will be the first coastguard vessel, and probably the first towing vessel in the world, to use Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel.

To be named KV Barentshav, this large offshore patrol vessel is designed for towing, rescue operations, oil recovery and fire fighting. The length will be 89.8m, breadth17,6m, maximum depth 5.8m and displacement 3,200 tons. A bollard pull of 110 tons is predicted and a top speed of over 20 knots.

The vessel will have a dual propulsion system, with a single main propeller driven via a gearbox and power plants located in two separate engine rooms.

When operating on LNG, four Mitsubishi generating sets (3xGS16R and 1x GS12R) will supply a total of 3,237kW to power a main electric drive motor, coupled to the gearbox. An LNG tank will have a capacity of 220m 3. Alternatively, a diesel fuelled single Bergen B32/40LSP, rated at 4,000kW, may be coupled direct to the shaft via the gearbox.

It is understood that the vessel is expected to operate on LNG for 90% of the year, but to achieve the full bollard pull both power plants will be in operation simultaneously.

Managing Director of Myklebust Verft, Mr Per Kristian Furo said, 'At Myklebust Verft we are happy having secured this contract with a customer well known to us. We are experienced in building coastguard vessels and have previously delivered vessels to the Faroe Islands, France and Norway.'

The Myklebust Verft shipyard currently has 7 vessels under construction with an order book valued at NOK 1.2bn.
