Software Monitors Marine Research Newbuild

UK based Marine Software has supplied Marine Planned Maintenance and Marine Storekeeper for the new research vessel RRS James Cook, delivered recently by the Norwegian Flekkefjord Slipp & Maskinfabrikk shipyard. This latest ship will be commissioned by the National Environment Research Council’s (NERC) Research Ship Unit, based at the Southampton Oceanography Centre.

In addition to supply of the software, Marine Software was also commissioned to set up a comprehensive maintenance database and stock system. Marine Software’s technical manager visited the shipyard during the build and obtained all available relevant information, including general arrangement, escape and safety plan drawings, along with photocopies of machinery maintenance instructions and maintenance schedules. This information, together with the initial Lloyds Class listing, was used for database set-up in Marine Software’s UK office.

Following arrival of the vessel at Southampton, Marine Software spent three days onboard finalising and scheduling the setup. At the end of this visit, the MCA carried out an audit of the Research Ship Unit ISM documentation system, which included a requirement for the vessel’s chief engineer officer to demonstrate the working planned maintenance system to the satisfaction of the auditor. The Marine Storekeeper stock control system was populated by importing stock data supplied on Excel spreadsheets compiled by ship’s staff whilst standing by the build. This stock control system was fully bar code enabled for receipts and issues and was supplied together with a bar code scanner and label printer.

The Research Ship Unit also purchased the MPM Bolt-on module to enable completed company standard forms to be transmitted to the office using Marine Software’s data transfer system, along with the ability of inserting pictures into both history completion records and the MPM defect module.
