Norwegians Get First of Coast Guard Series
01 Nov 2006
Norway’s Remoy Management has taken delivery of the first of what could eventually become a series of ten versatile, multi-purpose coast guard patrol boats from Polish shipbuilders and has said two more will be delivered in May and July of next year.
Technical manager Leifmar Andreassen told MJ the Nornen had just arrived following completion at Gryfia Shipyard in Szczecin. He said the newbuildings Heimdal and Tor would follow. The Gryfia Shipyard had been chosen for the work ‘because of its price and delivery time’
Andreassen said Remoy Management, which has owned and operated offshore, fishery and coastguard vessels since 1972, had options for three more. Remoy Shipping had ordered two and secured options for two more, he told MJ, but there was no word about whether or when any options might be converted.
Designed by Norway’s Skipsteknisk, the new boats are 47.2m long, 10.3m wide and have a top speed of some 16 knots. Accommodating 20 people, the boats have Ice-class 1B and are designed for general patrol tasks along the Norwegian coast and up to 24 nautical miles out to sea. They are also suitable for oil spill recovery tasks, with a tank capacity of 140m3 and are fitted with two MOB/rescue boats, a helicopter winch zone, a push bow and a work deck aft.
The main propulsion plant is a diesel electric system comprising two electric motors running two azimuth thrusters. Each shipset has a steerable Lips (Wärtsilä) thruster system of Type FS225-S/WN with an MCR of 1,100kW and also boasts a 300kW Lips (Wärtsilä) side propeller. The genset diesel motors are from Cummins and a tunnel thruster is fitted in the bow.
