40 Knots for Rapid Response Workboat

Skærgården 1 is propelled by twin UltraJet 340 waterjets and powered by twin Cummins 6 CTA8.3M diesel engines rated at 430 hp at 2600 rpm. The reversing deflectors are actuated by UltraJet hydro-mechanical control systems.

Built by Hemnes Mekaniske Verksted, this fast response aluminium workboat is designed for logistical support on a 24/7 basis for emergency ambulance/fire and oil spill response services, as well as providing a service for private boat and summer house owners and commercial companies along the Vestfold Coast of Norway.

Per-Sverre, managing director of Skjærgården 24, reports being extremely pleased with his latest acquisition. ‘We were very impressed by the performance of our new fast response multi-purpose workboat. It's very responsive and the twin UltraJet 340 waterjets jump onto plane in no time.

The manoeuvrability that the jets provide us with is exceptional and the load carrying capabilities and speeds we are achieving are also impressive. With one quarter of fuel and a crew of two we are getting close to 40 knots top speed! This is better than we had ever hoped for.

On one occasion we added an extra 8 tons of load to the boat and were still able to get 28 knots. On another job we towed a boat that weighed 100 tons at a speed of 12 knots.’ Fuel consumption for the 13.64m LOA monohedron hull vessel is 50 litres/hour with both engines operating at a cruise speed of 28 knots at the vessel’s light weight of 9 tons.

Per-Sverre of Skærgården 24 is so pleased with the new boat and jets that he has ordered another one just like it.
