‘Terramare 1’ Repowered and Ready

When Keith Pope moved on from his vessel of many years, ‘Josephine’, to acquire Terramare 1 recently, much of the refurbishment work had already been done by the original owner. The 24.5m LOA multi-purpose landing craft was built for use by the German Army, which had thoroughly modernised it in the 1990s, apart from its engines.

‘Terramare’ has been repowered with a pair of 11.1 litre Doosan Daewoo engines.

Since starting Penzance UK based Offshore Marine Solution Ltd (which originally traded as Pendrik Diving Services), workboat owner/operator Pope has worked on a wide range of projects including the massive Orseund Link project in Scandanavia, the Horns Rev wind farm off Denmark and, closer to home, the Arklow Bank wind farm off Ireland and the Kentish Flats wind farm in the Thames Estuary.

Such works require a stable and versatile craft, which the modernised Terramare 1 provides. A shallow draft of only 1.01m, the hydraulic deck ramp and a cargo deck measuring 15m by 4.5m further enhance the usefulness of a craft which can deliver plant weighing up to 80 tons onto a remote shore.

The vessel’s only perceived weakness was the original engines, large but not especially powerful MWM lumps dating back to when the boat was first constructed. For repowering, Pope turned to Mike Beacham at Devon based WaterMota Ltd, who sold him a pair of Doosan Daewoo MD196T1, 11.1 litre engines, each developing 320hp at 2,000rpm. The engines, which nearly doubled the propulsive power on board Terramare 1, are arranged for skin tank cooling, fitted with 24V insulated return electrics, and drive through Dong-I DMT140H reversing gearboxes with a 1.97:1 reduction ratio. BT Marine Propellers Ltd, also located in Devon, provided the stern gear, including four bladed propellers.

Now back in service, Terramare 1 enjoys much improved performance, operating at speeds to 9 knot as it undertakes cable burial, plant delivery, dredging support and wind farm servicing works amongst a wider range of potential duties for which it is well equipped and ready.
