Hamburg Serves Up a Whopper

SMM 2006 is setting records in all areas, with the world's largest shipbuilding event expecting 1,669 exhibiting companies from 50 countries to fill some 75,000m 2of exhibition space alongside a host of conferences and specialist events. The 22nd Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology International Trade Fair Hamburg will fill the enlarged facilities from 26 to 29 September, with some 40,000 trade visitors expected to attend from all continents.

Repower for Poole Harbour Ferry

Castello, a 9.14m passenger ferry, has been repowered with a Perkins Sabre 92hp diesel engine coupled to a Borg Warner 72C gearbox. The 36 year old boat, which can carry up to 28 passengers, travels at a maximum speed of nine knots as it cruises across Poole Harbour to Brownsea Island between the months of April and October.

From its location on Bahrain in the Arabian Gulf, the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) is well placed to win work on a wide variety of passing tonnage. The second quarter of 2006 was a busy time for ASRY, with high demand for all the docks and alongside repair facilities. All indications are that 2006 will be a record year, with 31 vessels booked for repair in the second quarter and another 29 repairs completed.

Belgians Flourish in South America

Belgium's Jan De Nul Group, together with SAIPEM and Constructoro Norberto Odebrecht, won a contract last month from Peru LNG to build marine export facilities at the Pampa Melchorita LNG facility, located some 200km south of Lima. The total contract is valued at $247m, with Jan De Nul taking a 20% portion.

Russian Contracts for Veripos

Irish Marine Institute Opens New HQ

The Irish Marine Institute's new headquarters at Oranmore, Galway Bay have been formally opened by Prime Minister Bertie Ahern. Housing a majority of the Institute's 200-strong staff, the 50m, 11,000m 2building features 54 scientific laboratories, a crescent-shaped office facility and a 150-seat auditorium specially designed for both national and international conferences.

Umoe's Long Term Strategy for Schat-Harding

Ship to Shore Cranes in Demand

Crane manufacturer Kalmar has won orders for two new super post-Panamax ship to shore cranes for MSC Home Terminal in Antwerp, on top of 15 cranes it supplied to the same port in 2004. Another order for a ship to shore container crane for Sweden's Helsingborgs Hamn AB will be the second largest crane working in a Swedish port.

Boskalis Acquires Large Contracts in Russia

Dutch dredging company Royal Boskalis Westminster has won two large contracts in Russia. In St Petersburg, Boskalis will dredge a new access channel from the sea. In Varandey, Boskalis is involved in the construction of two oil pipelines of 20km each in the Barents Sea. The total contract value of both projects amounts to some 75m.

newbuilding in the present plan is a complex 108.7m Subsea 'Inspection, Maintenance and Repair' vessel to be chartered by Deep Ocean Subsea Services, a company in which Ostensjo is the major shareholder. The 5,500 dwt ship has been designed by Skipsteknisk AS, designated ST-255L, and will be built by an undisclosed Norwegian yard for delivery in 2007. Among the vessel's principle tasks will be Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) operations, including those using modular handling systems, light construction works, scale squeeze and pumping operations. The ship is totally enclosed and specially designed for operation in northern waters and where exceptional manoeuvrability and station keeping qualities are paramount.

Race Against Time at Bremerhaven

Officials in Bremerhaven are working fast in the Weser approaches to ensure that the giant Emma Maersk, billed by her owners as the world's biggest container ship, will be able to turn when making its first call at a German port this month. The 400m long and 56m wide container giant is expected at Bremerhaven Container Terminal September 18 on her maiden voyage between Europe and Asia.

Marine Pollution Prevention Campaign Conducted

The 22 maritime authorities of Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control, which includes EU members plus Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Norway, and the Russian Federation, have conducted a concentrated inspection campaign focussing on how requirements for preventing marine pollution from ships (MARPOL73/78, Annex 1) have been implemented. The three month inspection campaign ended earlier this year.

The Land & Water Group, a specialist marine civil engineering contractor, employs over a hundred people, many of whom work alone on sites around the UK which are on or near watercourses. Three years ago it developed (in house) a lone worker system which, if submerged in water, would send out an audible alarm and three text messages to pre-programmed destinations.

Adsteam Introduce Low Cost Tug Fleet to the Humber

Adsteam Marine, one of the UK's leading towage operators, has launched Humber Tugs, a new low cost, 'no-frills' tug fleet on the Humber, in response to changes in local market conditions. The service was started last month with two Voith Schneider tractor tugs, HT Sword and HT Sabre, and the number is expected to rise to four by the end of the year.

When the oil exploration rig A Turtle grounded on one of the world's most remote and ecologically sensitive islands early in June it caused great concern among the small local population. The 6,357 gross tons rig, originally named Petrobras XXI, had been roaming the South Atlantic for several months unattended after it was let go by its tug in heavy weather.

. Scottish marine contractor MarineCo UK has ordered a Shoalbuster 2609 from Damen Shipyards at Hardinxveld. The new vessel will incorporate several changes to the basic design, including a larger bow thruster, a more powerful hydraulic system, and modifications to achieve improved all round visibility from the wheelhouse. To be named Marineco Toomai, the tug is scheduled for delivery in May 2007. 'The commissioning of a new vessel represents a strategic shift for Marineco and ensures that we can continue to meet demand and be ideally placed for further growth in the future', said MD Mike Conafray. Earlier in the year, Marineco UK joined forces with Iskes Tugs Marine Services of Ijmuiden in Holland.

Smit Internationale NV has reported an increase of 57% in their figures for the first half of 2006 In summary, the Harbour Towage division reported excellent results, the Terminals Division remains on track and the Transport & Heavy Lift Division experienced good rates and high fleet utilisation, while the Salvage Division has seen a low work rate.

A 26,000 ton bulk carrier had been involved in a serious grounding and Hydrex was called out to do an inspection off the coast of Cyprus. The owners wanted a clear picture of the extent of the damage and temporary repairs to enable the vessel to arrive safely in an Antwerp dry dock.
