Fugro Geos Ormen Lange Project
01 Sep 2006
Fugro Geos, which has provided measurement support services since 2001 for development of Ormen Lange, Norway's largest gas field, due to come onstream next year, has been contracted by Norsk Hydro to provide all-important real-time current profile, wind and wave data for both the pipeline and the field itself.
Using moored instrumentation at three locations along the hazardous pipeline route, including a template area location at a depth of 880m, the company plans to deploy a combination of sensors for acquisition of data which will then be relayed to a land-based web server.
Information will subsequently be displayed in real-time on a dedicated web page for use by vessels engaged in what is one of the world's major underwater ventures. Project Manager Richard Gaches says the new methods will represent a considerable advance on previous ones, which involved initial logging of all data.
Located in the Norwegian Sea, 120km off the mid-Norwegian coast, Ormen Lange will comprise the world's longest subsea pipeline, stretching from Norway to Easington on the UK coast. It will eventually provide around 20% of UK consumer gas supplies.
