Repower for Poole Harbour Ferry
01 Sep 2006
Castello, a 9.14m passenger ferry, has been repowered with a Perkins Sabre 92hp diesel engine coupled to a Borg Warner 72C gearbox. The 36 year old boat, which can carry up to 28 passengers, travels at a maximum speed of nine knots as it cruises across Poole Harbour to Brownsea Island between the months of April and October.
Bob Savage of Dorset based Sandbanks Marine Services, where the repower took place, said, 'Castello was previously fitted with a Perkins Sabre 4.23C engine but it was decided that the ferry should be repowered every five years due to the large number of hours it travels each month. Poole is the second largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney and Brownsea is the largest of eight islands in the harbour. It is an extremely busy stretch of water.'
This is the latest in a series of passenger ferry orders for the Perkins Sabre range. Others have included the Deben Ferry at Felixstowe and the Jenny R, which is operated by Southampton based Blue Funnel Cruises.
