Dredgers Make Beeline to ASRY

From its location on Bahrain in the Arabian Gulf, the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) is well placed to win work on a wide variety of passing tonnage. The second quarter of 2006 was a busy time for ASRY, with high demand for all the docks and alongside repair facilities. All indications are that 2006 will be a record year, with 31 vessels booked for repair in the second quarter and another 29 repairs completed.

As is the norm for ASRY, the range of vessels repaired includes ULCCs and VLCCs, bulk and chemical carriers, offshore support vessels, drilling rigs, and of course dredgers. With a sizeable percentage of the world dredging fleet at work in nearby Dubai, ASRY is winning much of the work to keep these marine workhorses operational.

Recent works on dredgers include repairs to the hopper door reach rods for Victoria Island, a trailing suction hopper dredger belonging to the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of the USA. This vessel also received steel renewal for the pump room hopper and the engine room hopper, repair of the bottom doors hydraulic cylinder, PT gimbal winches, port and starboard CPP systems and an overhaul of the starboard draghead winches.

HUTA -1, belonging to Saudi Arabia's Huta marine Works Ltd, had its hull blasted and painted, several mechanical and piping jobs undertaken, and various steel repairs. Another local vessel, M/V Anton of Bahrain's own National Marine Dredging, had its sea suction pipe renewed, bottom plate inserts, hull anodes renewed and sea chests cleaned.

Bahrain's Hafeet Dredging LLC sent its cutter suction dredger Hafeet for survey, hull scraping, high pressure washing, blasting and painting. Also undertaken was the cutting and welding of bottom access plates and the repair of three cracks in the aft spud carriage area.

The trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 309, belonging to the Netherland's Van Oord, had steel repairs in the hopper, jacking up for the coaming deck, bilge line renewal, sea chest cleaning, plus bottom blasting and painting. Another European boat, Boskalis' Coast Way visited ASRY for structural work and the mounting of new deck equipment.

All this activity contributes to sales revenue up 23% on the same period last year, with contract values also up. By July, 83 contracts had been confirmed, with all indications that there would be no let up in demand.

Forward orders already take the yard well into the third quarter of the year.
