01 Sep 2006
Vessel Traffic Management Systems Ltd (VTMS) has been awarded a contract to supply and install 12 navigation buoys and to upgrade the existing beacon in the river Newry.
With leisure traffic in particular increasing along the previously unmarked channel, the new buoys will allow safe navigation from Warrenpoint into Victoria Lock, Newry.
Leicester UK based V.T.M.S.
will be supplying its VT 1220 model marker buoy, which has a diameter of 1.2m and a 2m focal height. Works will be completed within 10 weeks.
The initiative is jointly funded by the local council and the European Union Interreg IIIA Cross Border Programme, Measure 1.4 Rural Initiative, which is jointly managed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) in the North and Border Action in the Border regions. Funding is also being received from the Crown Estate's Marine Stewardship Fund.
V.T.M.S. has also been awarded a contract to supply six navigation marker buoys for Ireland's Department of Defence.
The order consists of four VT 1220s and two larger VT 1525 models. These buoys will define a demarcation zone around a firing range in Lough Rea.
