New Gyros for Navy Patrol Boats
01 Sep 2006
Watford UK based TSS International Ltd has delivered 21 of its latest high performance S G Brown Meridian gyro-compasses to the British Royal Navy. These are being installed on board the Royal Navy's fleet of P2000 Archer Class patrol boats to replace earlier model S G Brown gyros.
The order was placed by FWS IPT, the MoD department responsible for providing in-service engineering and material support for naval communications, navigation and radar equipment. It also included the supply of remote control repeater units and the development and manufacture of separate solid state re-transmission units. These enable the new Meridian gyros to integrate with the boats' existing M-type electronic systems so they can be used by components such as radar, autopilot and electronic charting.
The Meridian gyro is fully approved to IMO standards, which make it suitable for use aboard ships of any size. It is, however, proving particularly attractive to operators of smaller vessels such as the P2000 boats due to its compact dimensions and performance and durability in extreme sea conditions.
The Meridian employs a dynamically tuned gyrosphere which benefits the user by significantly reducing its maintenance requirements and costs. The gyrosphere gives the compass the very fast settle time of 45 minutes and the ability to follow rates of turn as rapid as 2000 per second. The Meridian features a 3600 compass card display while the digital remote control unit has given the Royal Navy the freedom to install the gyro in the most convenient location while positioning the remote control unit where it can be seen and used most easily.
The Meridian gyro-compass measures just 344mm by 267mm by 440mm and although suitable for any type of commercial vessel, it is considered particularly appropriate for use within the integrated bridge of high speed craft or as a stand alone unit for a GMDSS system. It offers a large array of digital or analogue outputs plus a number of digital set-up and test modes that are activated via the control unit.
