DEFRA Announces Fee Rises for Marine Licensing

DEFRA in the UK has announced that fees for marine industry environmental licences would increase at the end of July.

The decision to implement the fee rises for disposal licensing, which follows a 12 week consultation, will allow DEFRA to fully recover its costs.

The consultation considered each licence component in detail, examining how fees are built to recover full cost to the regulator.

There will be:

. An overall average 22% increase in disposal licence fees.

. No increase to the second and third year instalments of long term disposal licence fees.

. No increase to the construction licence fees for this financial year.

. A 3% increase in fees for oil spill treatment products.

. A pilot investigation into the possibility of chemical analyses of dredging samples to be carried out by accredited laboratories other than just the Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) laboratories.

. A desk study investigating how port dredging and disposal management programmes can be implemented for a number of years under a core licence.

. "Quick wins" for service improvement, to ensure an improved service delivery system is in place.
