'No Comment' is Good News on Dublin's New Pontoons
01 Sep 2006
Whilst Dublin's new water bus Spirit of Dockland's and its Liffey Voyage have been the focus of much media attention and admiration, no one seems to have noticed the equally impressive pontoons that are an essential part of the same initiative.
Almost 1,000 tons of concrete pontoons have disappeared into the River Liffey in the centre of Dublin and merged perfectly with the backdrop of the beautiful cityscape. The pontoons were so discreetly designed and skilfully inserted into the inner city centre that there was no comment at all by the media.
The design and installation of the pontoons and anchoring system was the work of an Irish team led by Milford Marina Systems and are part of the new Dublin Docks Development. The development consists of three water bus landing stages; one southeast of Ha'penny Bridge, one at Point Depot, and one at the mouth of George's Docks on the Custom House Quay. They are moored by 250 tons of concrete anchor blocks and a discreet rubber anchoring system that is invisible from above the water.
Rod Calder-Potts of Milford Marina Systems said, 'Milford specialises in challenging marine structures and it has been a pleasure designing and constructing such an exciting development, particularly when the clients were so receptive to new ideas, very supportive and brave enough to go for a radical new design, whilst also respecting the unique nature of the special River Liffey and its historical quays.'
