Pontoons Cap Fishing Harbour Revamp

Southampton UK based Solent Marine designed and built 80 pontoon sections and designed a 36m linkspan bridge which recently completed a multi-faceted project to create moorings for the fishing fleet in Cornwall's Newlyn Harbour.

The project also involved dredging the inner harbour to 2.5m at all states of the tide, a process complicated by the fact that some of the sediment was contaminated. Following lengthy negotiations, tests and trials, a scheme was agreed whereby the contaminated dredged material was treated and beneficially re-used to raise land levels as dictated by flood risk regulations at the nearby Sandy Cove development site.

Meanwhile, main contractors May Gurney assigned the installation of 26 steel piles which would secure the pontoons to Seacore. Placement from a Seacore jack-up barge was made to a piling layout also designed by Solent Marine, which manufactured the pontoon sections in only 10 weeks between the start of engineering and delivery by lorry to Newlyn Harbour.

The pontoons ranged from 1.2m wide fingers to 3m wide by 13.5m long main sections built to accommodate 20 ton fishing vessels alongside.
