Damen Multi Cat Built in Abu Dhabi

A strategic partnership between Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands and Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has seen the delivery of a multi-purpose vessel to the Emirates Dredging Company (EDC) four weeks ahead of schedule. The Multi Cat 1908 is the first vessel of its type built by ADSB and will be used for dredging support operations in Abu Dhabi waters, joining a 12m Pushy Cat tug delivered by ADSB a month earlier.
The versatile 18.7m Bureau Veritas classed Multi Cat is named ‘EDC M1’ and was built to a Damen design. It has a 10.6 ton bollard pull, will exceed 9 knots, and is fitted with a 6.4 ton hydraulic crane. The vessel is also equipped with cargo tanks for fuel oil and fresh water.
Commenting on his company’s newbuild, EDC general manager Ahmed Nagi Al Masabbi said, ‘We are delighted to receive this high quality new vessel one month ahead of the contract delivery date. The quality of workmanship and overall finish of the vessel is excellent and we wish ADSB continued success with their commercial shipbuilding programmes.’
ADSB is involved in the building and repair of both naval and commercial vessels. It has a contract for six corvettes for the UAE Navy and commercial newbuild projects include a 40m triple screw, aluminium alloy crew boat and a fast landing craft constructed of composite materials. With an estimated 40% of the world dredging fleet currently operating in the region, the partnership with Damen Shipyards could prove very strategic indeed.
ADSB’s CEO Bill Saltzer added, ‘ADSB is proud to say that this new 1908 Multi Cat for Emirates Dredging is a vessel built in the UAE by a UAE company to be operated in the UAE by a UAE company. Not only is this beneficial for our two companies but it also brings positive effects to the economy and industrialisation of the country.’
