Dredger Boom Sees IHC Add Shipyard

With the global demand for newbuild dredgers now exceeding building capacity, IHC Holland Merwede has rented the former Alblas Scheepsbouw BV yard, situated along the river De Noord at Hendrik Ido Ambacht in the Netherlands.

The staff of the yard has joined IHC Holland Dredgers (Kinderdijk) but continues working at the Hendrik Ido Ambacht location. IHC – Alblas will be used to build sections for vessels being built in the other four IHC Group yards. It is envisioned that the 90m by 25.3m slipway could eventually be reinstated to build complete craft. The yard also features a cutting hall, a preparation hall, a section hall and an office annex. IHC also rents the 110m fitting out quay. In the past the complex has been used to build river vessels and specialised vessels, with a maximum length of up to some 100m possible on the outside slipway.

IHC sees the addition of the Alblas yard as a necessary expansion of its building capacity in the Netherlands, where bookings for newbuild dredgers extend into 2009. The Group also operates covered slipways for newbuilding at Kinderdijk, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Krimpen aan den Ijssel, and Sliedrecht.
