Handlers at the Heart of Operations

The first vessel in over a decade to collect scrap metal from the UK Port of Wisbech has been loaded in an operation made possible by upgraded handling facilities. The cargo ship Brandaris sailed to the Norfolk port from Scotland with a cargo of sugar beet then collected the scrap metal shipment which was arranged by local waste management specialists Glazewing.

Prior to the arrival of the Brandaris, Glazewing had been stockpiling scrap metal on the quayside to load into the cargo hold of the ship for delivery to Pasajes in northern Spain.

Central to this operation are two Sennebogen Greenline material handlers, one of which, an 835M, has recently been purchased from UK distributor E H Hasell. Working alongside an 825 machine, the new 835M was deployed loading scrap directly into the hold of Brandaris.

The new machine is the fourth that Glazewing have purchased from E H Hasell in the last 14 months. It has been supplied with a type C270 hydraulically adjustable, air conditioned operator’s cabin which provides excellent all round visibility for safe loading. Operating on solid rubber tyres, the machine is equipped with a type K17 materials handling boom, consisting of a 9.7m boom and a 7.8m stick. The 835M is powered by larger 200 kW Deutz BF6M 1013 FC water cooled engine instead of the standard 166 kW unit.

Commenting on the first shiopment, Glazewing managing director David Grief said, ‘This is a very exciting new venture for Glazewing, using the Port of Wisbech as a base to export scrap metal for recycling. This will eliminate long journeys up to the Humber ports, where the shipments have historically been handled.’

Glazewing is looking to export some 4,000 tons of scrap metal per month from the port.
