New Cat ACERTs Itself

Caterpillar launched the new Cat C18 ACERT engine at the recent Workboat Show in New Orleans. Based on the existing Cat C18 and 3406 marine engines, the new model will be available in eight commercial power ratings ranging from 454bhpat 1,800rpm to 873bhp at 2,200rpm and compliant with US EPA Marine Tier 2 commercial regulations.

The 18.1 litre displacement, electronically controlled C18 ACERT is a compact in-line six cylinder unit delivering high horsepower and proven durability with low emissions. ACERT technology, incorporating high pressure fuel injection, electronic controls, efficient combustion and after cooling, provides a long term emissions solution allowing the engines to meet current standards while maintaining the same weight and size package as the previous C18 propulsion engine. The new engines will target displacement hull commercial applications such as towboats, OSVs, patrol craft, passenger vessels, fishing boats and pilot boats.

The mechanically actuated, electronically controlled unit injection (MEUI) system, along with specially designed camshaft, provides precise control over the high pressure injection process. The MEUI injector is a proven reliable design featuring a stainless steel sleeve and adjustment-free operation. The combustion process is further enhanced by a unique piston, ring, and liner design that minimises blow-by gases and liner wear.

The new A4 ECU has increased processing power, memory and fuel map capability over its predecessor, the A3. The software control logic is written to match power and torque to the required application while at the same time meeting current emissions regulations. The A4 ECU supports high speed data link and retains the 70 pin customer connection.

Aftercooling is achieved through a separate circuit bar-plate type seawater aftercooler which offers advantages over tube-fin type aftercoolers. The bar-plate type aftercooler allows improved water flow distribution and has larger internal water passages that reduce plugging from seaweed and other debris. It also offers a more rigid construction that is less susceptible to vibration.

The closed crankcase ventilation system, along with the high efficiency fumes recirculation system, helps eliminate oil vapour from the engine room. The C18 ACERT is available in either a heat exchanger cooled or keel cooled option. The C18 ACERT comes standard with a bronze impeller seawater pump, engine mounted start/stop box, power takeoffs, and protection system.
