Schiffko Reveals New Offshore Patrol Propulsion

Naval engineers Schiffko have revealed a new type of offshore patrol/SAR boat powered by an innovative propulsion concept. Working with development partners Voith Turbo Marine, the Potsdam Model Basin (SVA), and consultant Karl Otto Sadler, Schiffko is heading the development of a hybrid propulsion concept for a drive with low emission and noise levels.

The hybrid propulsion plant comprises four deeply submerged Voith Water Jets (VWJ), two Voith Cycloidal Rudders (VCR) and an inline thruster from AIR as well as a hull form specially developed by Schiffko in cooperation with SVA. Schiffko is also responsible for the system integration of the water jet unit with the relevant propulsion components and all the other equipment.

The deeply submerged VWJ was designed specifically for ships with speed capabilities of 25 to 40 knots. The specially shaped jet comprises a rotor and a stator. The diameter of the rotor is 2m and the VWJ has an overall length of some 3m. The VWJ has an output of 6.2MW and has proven superior to traditional waterjets in terms of efficiency, noise optimisation and emissions reduction.

The new propulsion concept has been undergoing testing at the Potsdam Model Basin, with all testing thus far confirming forecast results. The market launch of the system is set for this year, when the design and testing phase will be completed and a start made on the construction of the first VWJ.
