Hamburg based Fairplay Towage has ordered two more tugs from Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Armon in order to expand its current fleet. In the autumn of 2005 Fairplay and its associate company URS of Belgium placed an order with Armon for four compact stern drive tugs of 5,027bhp with a bollard pull of 80 tons.

Fairplay has ordered the next generation of shiphandling and offshore ASDs.

The first of those vessels will be completed later this year (MJ – September 2005). But this latest order is for vessels of a very different type, with delivery planned for February and October 2008.

The sister tugs will have an overall length of 36.0m and beam of 12.7m and will be employed predominantly in the offshore market in addition to harbour duties in Rotterdam and Europort. The tugs are to be built according to the guidelines of the German SBG under Germanischer Lloyd classification: X GL 100 A5 M E1 Tug / X GL MC E1 Aut FF1. The Ice Class E1 notation is intended to fit the vessels for winter service in North European waters.

Two 12 cylinder ABC 12VDZC four stroke main engines, each rated 2,652 kW at 1,000 rpm (total approximately 7,150bhp) will drive two fully steerable Schottel propulsion units via MC-HD-slipping clutch units. This propulsion system is expected to produce a minimum bollard pull of 80 tons and a free running speed of 14 knots. .

Two six cylinder diesel generators, each with an output of 160kW, will supply electrical power for the ship and a third six cylinder 600kW diesel will drive a Schottel STT 110LK bow thruster and pumps for the Kvaerner FiFi-1 fire fighting installation.

Towing gear will include a Brusselles waterfall winch on the aft deck. The upper drum will have a maximum brake load of 2,000kN and carry 1,200m of SWR towline 54mm in diameter. A lower anchor handling drum will have a brake load of 2,500 kN and a wire capacity of 900m of 54mm SWR. For shiphandling the tugs will be equipped with a combined towing/anchor winch on the foredeck, equipped with a single drum and a 400m towline of 54mm SWR.

Also included in the inventory of deck equipment will be a hydraulic deck crane, two Brusselles tugger winches, a set of Karmoy Triplex AS H 200 sharks jaws, Karmoy Triplex AS S 200 towing pins, and an open stern with a 2.5m wide stern roller.

The navigation and communications package to be installed in the wheelhouse will meet current technical standards and include GMDSS compatible gyro-compass, autopilot, electronic sea charting, AIS and two radars. Air conditioned accommodation will have eight cabins with berths for a maximum of 12 persons, an adequately designed mess and dayroom and the usual galley and sanitary facilities.
