Van der Wees Celebrate Centenary of Service

On the 1st of January the Dutch transport contractors Van der Wees Watertransporten BV, well known for their extensive fleet of tugs and barges, celebrated 100 years of service to the marine industry. The company was founded in Delft in 1907 when the brothers Abraham and Nicolaas van der Wees started their company A. Van der Wees & Co. From those early days the firm grew steadily and built a reputation being capable, trustworthy and innovative.

An office was opened in Dordrecht in 1920 and the brothers started to concentrate on the transport of reels and wooden piles but it was the carriage of fuel and oil that was responsible for the company’s growth. Since 1934 Van der Wees has also specialised in the transportation of concrete piles of various length on specially designed trailers.

The eldest son of the founder, also named Abraham, had by this time joined the company. He moved to Dordrecht just prior to World War II and a few days after moving into new premises, almost everything was destroyed during heavy fighting and the bombing of nearby bridges. After the war new equipment was bought from army surplus, the old ships and trailers having been destroyed or damaged beyond repair during the war. All of the personnel survived the war.

When Mr Piet Van der Wees joined the company his main task was to develop the water transport aspects and make international transport a possibility. That took Van der Wees into Germany, England, Spain, Norway and later Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. In 2002 the company was reorganised into three divisions: Water Transport, Road Transport and Logistics. Each speciality now uses ‘state of the art’ equipment. The group thus offers a complete range of special transport related facilities varying from trailers to tugs and pontoons to cranes and storage capacity. After 100 years of service to their customers, Van der Wees has expressed their intention to continue in this manner, offering transportation by waterway and road and logistic services all within one company.
