Kötter-Werft Tackles Biggest Ever Dry Land Overhaul

Kötter-Werft has overhauled its biggest ever vessel on dry land, the 105m inland cargo ship Karl Hein, during a busy couple of months at its Haren facilities on the Ems in north Germany.

The ship, owned locally, was 9.5m wide and of 2,000 dwt. It was the biggest vessel ever handled out of the water by Kötter. Tackling it was made possible by the leasing of a neighbouring inland shipyard which used to belong to Schulte & Müller and was, before that, the Janssen Werft. Kötter leased the facility in July, after its previous leaseholder went bankrupt, in order to expand its own capacity.

Kötter Werft’s Hermann Kötter told MJ that ships of up to 110m can now be handled out of the water at the leased yard, which has a well maintained slipway for newbuilding and lengthening. Hermann Koetter revealed it was being used for three more ships of between 100 and 105m, which were being taken out of the water this month for work.

Just completed, in a fast three weeks, has been the lengthening of the inland cargo ship Janine by 12m to 85m for Dutch shipowner Jan Uil. The changes increased deadweight by 250 tons to 1,350 tons.

Late work also included the lengthening of the 80m inland cargo ship Reiderland. The vessel was given an extra 5m of capacity for Dutch owner van der Wal. The work increased dwt by 150 to 1785 tons and took ten days.

Hermann Koetter also confirmed to MJ that his yard was building the Type Futura semi catamaran inland cargo tanker Till Deymann for Gerhardt & Deymann. That 109.8m long ship is the first Futura tanker to be built but the second of the modular series. The first is being completed at Navitek for RMS.
