Underwater Acoustics Courses
01 Aug 2007
The UK National Physical Laboratory at Teddington is once more hosting three Seiche professional development courses on underwater acoustics from 10 to 14 September.
They cover Basic Underwater Acoustics, Advanced Underwater Acoustics, and Acoustic Wildlife Monitoring, with the last two including an introduction to Heriot-Watt University’s Pamguard software.
Pamguard, according to the NPL, is intended to become the de facto software standard for cetacean or mammal monitoring. It is an open source code written in Java with a wide range of signal processing and display capabilities. A lecture and workshop on its development and features will be included for delegates.
Seiche says the courses will be of particular value to engineers, scientists, project managers and specialist sales executives wishing to enhance their knowledge of sound propagation in oceans. Delegates will be familiarised with the various equipment and measuring standards as well as a clear understanding of the proper use of units of measurement for sound levels. They will also be able to learn about conducting sound calculations for both engineering and natural biological sonars.
