First Xbloc Project in Europe Completed
01 Aug 2007
The first project in Europe to make use of the Xbloc interlocking armoured sea defence unit has recently been completed.
The project was at Port Oriel, Clogerhead, a fishing port on the east coast of Ireland.
The port consists of a small harbour basin and a pier, both built in 1885, and the project saw the pier extended. Lagan Construction was awarded a contract for the rehabilitation and extension work and the design work was prepared by Kirk McClure Morton.
Lagan Construction used the Xbloc armoured unit for technical and economic reasons. Approximately 1,600 Xbloc units were successfully placed by Lagan Construction during the project and the completed project was formally opened in the presence of the Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern T D, and the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey T D, in May.
The first 2,000 Xbloc units for the use at the Port of Poti in Georgia have also recently been produced. The moulds were produced in the Netherlands and transported to Georgia on trucks.
