‘Galatea’s Arrival Complete GLA Trio

Trinity House’s new vessel, ‘THV Galatea’, arrived in its home port of Harwich in Essex UK for the first time on 23rd July, docking alongside the Trinity House pier after completing the delivery voyage from the Stocznia Remontowa shipyard at Gdansk in Poland.

‘THV Galatea’ is welcomed to its home port of Harwich last month.

The Galatea is a Multi-Function Tender (MFT) ordered to complement and enhance the work of Trinity House in providing aids to navigation for the safe passage of mariners around the coasts of England, Wales and the Channel Islands.

The vessel will be required to undertake maintenance work, buoy deployment, wreck location marking and towing amongst other projects.

The Galatea is a replacement for THV Mermaid which will be sold out of service once the new vessel has successfully completed an initial period of trials and crew training.

‘The arrival of our new vessel has been much anticipated by all within Trinity House and as the hour of her arrival nears our excitement increases, said Trinity House executive chairman Jeremy de Halpert as the vessel neared Harwich. ‘Her sister ship Pharos, in service with the Northern Lighthouse Board, has proved every bit as excellent as hoped, and we look forward to putting the Galatea through her paces in the fulfilment of our vital work.’

The vessel’s arrival completes the delivery of a £38m investment by the General Lighthouse Authorities in three vessels, the first of which was the Alert, followed by Pharos. The Galatea will be formally named with the traditional bottle smashing ceremony towards the end of the year.
