Lift Efficiency Boosts Tiger Bay

Marine Travelift Inc has sold its very first self-propelled transporter onto the US market. The Marine Travelift TM 40C was purchased by Tiger Point Marina and Boat Works of Jacksonville in Florida.

Tiger Point also purchased some 50 purpose -built sail boat cradles to be used in conjunction with the transporter and already the investment is paying dividends.

Marina owner Bill Kavanaugh said, 'One of the major elements of our business is to provide ‘hurricane season’ storage for our customers’ boats. Since introducing the transporter and cradles into our operations, we have virtually doubled the available storage space. The transporter can access land that was previously underutilized, while positioning boats in much closer proximity. This is fundamental for our business growth once the boats have been lifted from the water. Another huge bonus is the specially designed sail boat cradles. When the boats are locked into the rigid frame during storms and high winds, the boats will not move. This storage method not only gives our customers peace of mind, particularly during hurricane season, but insurance companies are wholeheartedly endorsing this safer storage process.'

Due to the layout of the Tiger Point Marina it was necessary for the transporter to traverse a highway, which meant that safety was a prime consideration. For this reason, an operator’s cab was added as well as increased ground speed, but the cambered road surface was problematic. Fortunately, the Engineering department at Marine Travelift was able to provide a solution. By allowing the hydraulic cylinders to operate independently, the transporter could then be raised or lowered on any given corner to counteract the gradient of the road surface. Once the transporter reaches the desired location, the boat complete with cradle is lowered into position.

Tiger Point Marina already employs a Marine Travelift 35 BFM boat hoist, so the new transporter complements its yard operations. Tiger Point now has a fully integrated boat management system that is set to provide future sustainability as well as increase profitability.
