Dredging Systems Readied in Mozambique

Swindon UK based hydrographic survey systems supplier Del Norte Technology Ltd has completed its contribution to the handover of the single pipe trailing suction hopper dredger ‘M S Alacantara Santos’ from the Japanese shipbuilders Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to the Mozambique government's dredging company, Emodraga.

Del Norte supplied the navigation and tide gauge system together with the complex computer system running a dedicated Hypack, DredgePack software with three flat screen bridge displays.

Installation and initial sea trials were carried out in Kobi , Japan by Del Norte's managing director Laurie Smith and Lazar Prevac from Hypack. The new dredger then sailed across the Pacific to arrive in Beira, Mozambique some six weeks later for acceptance trials.

Final operational tests of the Del Norte installed CSI VectorPro, Valeport 740 tide gauge, Entek Bubbler system and Dredgepack software were carried out, followed by dredge trials and final software tweeking taking place over three full days. The Bubbler system was calibrated through the DredgePack and the vessel was finally handed over by the builder to the President of the Mozambique Government.

Three years previously Del Norte was involved in the supply, installation and setting to work of an identical system on the sister ship ‘MS Aruangwa’ whilst on dredging operations in Maputo. On that occasion a shore DGPS was supplied and installed together with another Valeport 740 T/G system and Satel Data link system.

Pre-dredge surveys are carried out with a Del Norte supplied DGPS and Hypack system. Hypack carried out the processing and volume computations, with the dredge area colour coded, giving the dredge master an accurate representation of the area to be dredged.
