  • FerryGreen Way to Save the Planet

    The first ferry ticket agency in the UK to address the environmental issues associated with travel by sea has launched a website at which customers have the opportunity to offset carbon emissions during the booking process.   

  • Virtual Ferry Cross the Mersey

    UK Shipping Minister Stephen Ladyman had the opportunity to pilot a virtual ferry ‘cross the Mersey on a recent visit to Liverpool John Moores University’s (LJMU) Lairdside Maritime Centre. Dr Ladyman took the helm of the UK’s only full mission ship bridge simulator with a 360 degree visual projection system.

  • ROV Buyouts

    Expenditure on ROV operations, which has more than doubled since 2002 according to industry estimates, has just risen still further with news that Seaeye, the Fareham UK based company specialising in development of electrically powered systems for the offshore oil and gas industries, has been bought by Saab of Sweden for a reported £13m.  

  • UKHO Courses

    The UK Hydrographic Office has introduced a new brochure on its programme of accredited courses on marine cartography and associated disciplines which are available at its training centre in Taunton.  

  • South African Contract for SRD

    SRD of Beverley, East Yorkshire UK reports delivery of a purpose designed multibeam seabed visualisation, measurement and control system to De Beers Marine in South Africa under a contract worth over £500,000.  

  • Galileo Problems

    The Galileo project, Europe’s proposed answer to the US Global Positioning System (GPS), is in disarray following the failure of an eight member group of companies to meet a European Commission deadline to transform itself into a legal entity with a chief executive, headquarters and a strategy.  

  • MCA Data Available on Google Earth

    The Hydrography Unit of the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency‘s Navigation Safety Branch has released a selection of files on recent bathymetric multibeam surveys for downloading to the general public using Google Earth, a free add-on to the Google search engine.  

  • Fast Water Bus for Marine Public Transport

    Aquabus Water Transport Solutions Ltd was formed in 2006 by Captain Roger Meredith and Steve Woodward, who already own Cardiff Bay Cruises Ltd and Cardiff Baylink Ltd, to operate quality cruse vessels and a water transport system respectively.

    Any vessel that might sail into waters governed by the USA and its territories is required to meet new US Coast Guard Marine Casualties and Investigation Regulations which have recently been amended to cover drugs and alcohol testing.  

  • New Gas Detector Gets CO Too

    Dutch marine equipment supplier Vetus its previous gas detector with the new model GD 1000, which in addition to flammable gases now also detects inert but deadly carbon monoxide.

  • ‘MSC Napoli’ is Refloated & Re-Beached

    The ongoing saga of the ill fated ‘MSC Napoli’ took another significant turn on the 9th of July when the 53,409gt vessel was refloated. 

  • New Catamaran Charter Boat at Lowestoft.

    A new Blyth Workcat catamaran charter boat has arrived at Oulton Broad in Lowestoft UK, having been built at Blyth’s works at Canvey Island in Essex.  

  • Pay for Port Links says FTA

    The UK’s Freight Transport Association (FTA), whose members consign over 70% of the freight moved by sea, has called on the Government to use its forthcoming Ports Policy Paper to accept responsibility for funding inland transport links from ports, as happens in other developed nations.  

  • Lower Elbe Sounding Ship for Germans

    The new 23.9m modern sounding boat Wedel is now in service on the Elbe after completion for north German shipping authorities by the Fassmer Shipyard in Berne as a replacement for two older vessels.  

  • Construction Start at Great Yarmouth

    The Great Yarmouth Port Company has awarded a contract valued at some £50m to a joint venture of Van Oord UK Ltd and Edmund Nuttall Ltd to build the long awaited Outer Harbour Development, which is expected to be a major catalyst for economic growth both in the port city itself and the entire east of England.  

  • €650m Newbuild Boom for IHC

    Having gained new orders to the value of €650m over the last three months, Dutch dredger builder IHC Holland Merwede has purchased the largest covered slipway in Europe at Krimpen aan den Ijssel, where it will build the world’s largest trailing suction hopper dredger.   

  • Ostensjo to Build Offshore ‘Flotel’

    Ostensjo group member Edda Accommodation has placed an order for the offshore industry’s first purpose built ‘flotel’. ‘Edda TBN’ will be an Offshore Accommodation Vessel for a total of 600 personnel.

    The first ever British & International Sailors’ Society Dragon Boat Challenge took place last month at the 2012 Olympic rowing venue at Dorney Lake, Eton.

    Fareham UK based ROV manufacturer Seaeye Marine has delivered the 100th Falcon ROV to Aberdeen based Fugro-Rovtech as part of an ROV fleet update and expansion programme underway this year.

    Dubai World, which owns Dubai Ports World, which purchased P&O’s global ports operations last year, has now acquired the iconic ocean liner ‘Queen Elizabeth 2’ for $100m.

  • Acoustic Enclosures for Marine Power

    Ipswich UK based diesel generator manufacturer G&M Power Plant Ltd has designed and built a new sliding door acoustic enclosure which can be specified with sound levels from 70 dB(A) to as low as 60 dB(A) at 1m.  

  • Trim Tab Takeoff at Seawork

    One of the products being shown by Poole UK based Marine Components International at Seawork 2007 last month was the new SST System by Bennett Marine.  

  • Hot Schottel Having Busy Season

    An offshore supply vessel due to enter service in 2009 will be fitted with Schottel Twin-Propellers and a Schottel retractable Rudderpropeller.  

  • Largest FF Waterjet Seen First at Seawork

    Rolls-Royce introduced the largest waterjet to appear thus far in its Kamewa FF series at Seawork 2007 in Southampton last month. The FF600 unit extends the power range of the axial flow waterjets to 1,800kW.   

  • ‘Emerald’ Green Power at Seawork

    Sailing yachts may not have been as commonplace as tugs and pilot boats on the Seawork floating pontoon last month but the Beneteau 411 ‘Emerald’ had lots to show with regard to the likely future of marine on board power.

  • Voith the Choice for China

    The concept of the Voith Water Tractor proved popular with the Shanghai Port Authority. Last year, it had ordered two such VWTs to be completed by October this year.  

  • Harley Goes Green with ‘Lela Joy’

    As of January this year all newbuilds for service in US waters are required to be powered with engines that meet the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 2 emission standards.

    Recent casualties, including the ‘MSC Napoli’, have brought the issue of places of refuge back under the spotlight.  

  • ‘Centaur II’ is now in service in the Polish port of Gdynia.

    The new ASD tug ‘Centaur II’ has now entered service with Gdynia Harbour Tug Services in Poland. Completed in April by Gdansk Shiprepair Yard Remontowa SA, the 31.2m long tug has a beam of 10.5m and draft of 4.8m.

    Hamburg based Fairplay Towage named its latest new tug the ‘Fairplay III’ on the 28th of June in Rotterdam.  

  • ‘Mariette’ Crosses the North Sea to Seawork

    The little manned model tug ‘Mariette’ created a great deal of interest at Seawork recently when it was used to demonstrate the principles of the Mampaey ‘Dynamic Oval Towing’ (DOT) system.   

  • An Important Purchase for Targe Towing

    Scottish tug owner Targe Towing confirmed their purchase of three former BP tugs, dedicated to towage services at the Coryton oil refinery, with a short ceremony at Tilbury  

  • Fairmount Complete Their Five Tug Fleet

    ‘Fairmount Expedition’, the fifth of the new Fairmount Class of tugs, is now in service. The vessel was launched in February this year, named in Japan on 21 May and, after extensive trials, joined the fleet of Netherlands based Fairmount Marine BV early in June.
