South African Contract for SRD

SRD of Beverley, East Yorkshire UK reports delivery of a purpose designed multibeam seabed visualisation, measurement and control system to De Beers Marine in South Africa under a contract worth over £500,000.

Part of the De Beers Group which mines an estimated 40% of the world’s diamonds, De Beers Marine will use the system for the recovery of offshore diamonds in waters previously thought to be uneconomic to exploit.

SRD says it developed the system by integrating transducer arrays from its SVS3 series of real-time digital sonar acquisition equipment with proprietary visualisation software. To be deployed from De Beer’s new mining vessel equipped with a diamond hunting crawler, ‘Peace in Africa’, it will generate real-time 3D images of underwater environments while also providing data on the crawler’s cutting depth and volumes of material being removed.
