Scania is ‘Cool’ on Seawork Quayside
01 Jul 2007
Scania launched a new 12 litre marine diesel engine at the Seawork 2007 exhibition in Southampton last month.
On show at Scania’s customary quayside location, the latest version turns out a full 700 hp for ‘patrol short’ operation and is also available with 550 or 625 hp for ‘patrol long’ service.
Extra cooling capacity is provided by an innovative combination of cooling systems for engine, turbo and charge air. Emission compliance meets Tier 2, Stage III A marine and IMO unclassified.
The various cooling refinements enable the top output of 700 hp at 2,300 rpm. Dual charge air coolers secure sufficient intake air cooling with the high boost pressures required. The high output turbocharger is water cooled whilst Scania’s keystone ring design pistons are jet cooled by oil.
The engine features Scania EMS, an engine management system developed in-house which is most flexible when tailoring engine performance to individual customer applications.
Scania’s 12 litre marine engine features compact dimensions and a service-friendly architecture. The camshaft is mounted high in the block with short pushrods for precise actuation of the valve gear and unit injectors. Separate cylinder heads and wet liners make it easy for a single mechanic to overhaul any individual cylinder without touvhing the others.
