Cardiff – A Maritime History

Cardiff has a long and illustrious maritime history.

This beautifully illustrated history of Cardiff and Penarth’s maritime past aims to provide a comprehensive account of the past, from the first stirrings of seaborne trade, and the cargoes of wool, hides and butter to the ever-present threat of piracy; from the rapid development linked to the export of iron, and the later trade in coal; to the changes wrought by the effects of the First World War, and the changes in types of vessels over the years.

The Marquess of Bute’s Docks were the heart of Cardiff and central to the development not only of the city but also of its hinterland. The port became of worldwide importance and Cardiff ships and men made their way to any place where a cargo might be found.

Rapid growth came through Cardiff’s role as a port exporting iron from the works around Merthyr Tydfil, and a booming trade in coal led to further expansion, with the building of new docks at Cardiff and Penarth. There were tragic losses in the two world wars which were to be followed by a sharp decline in the demand for south Wales coal.

Linked with changes in the nature of the port’s trade were developments in the vessels carrying the cargoes – from sail to steam and motor, and the introduction of faster and larger ships.

This beautifully illustrated history will appeal to local historians and shipping enthusiasts around the world.

John Richards has an MA from Cambridge and has previously written two books, Wales on the Western Front for university of Wales press, and a history of Cottrell Park, Vale of Glamorgan.
