Miko’s MiCon Makes Seawork Debut
01 Jun 2007
Close cooperation between the Norwegian tug and salvage company Busker og Berging AS and Seawork 2007 exhibitor Miko Marine AS has given birth to a new product.
MiCon, the Miko Connector, is a helicopter deployed towing connection for use on an abandoned vessel in combination with Sea Anchor to reduce drift speed. It is a valuable tool to improve the chances of successful salvage.
Miko Marine AS has also recently signed a contract to supply the French Navy with emergency repair kits containing magnetic patches to close openings on punctured vessels.
The patented magnetic patches ‘Miko Plaster’ are used as emergency repair equipment and will increase the chances of preventing a total loss or a large oil spill. The delivery for more than 250 French Navy vessels will be made over the next two and a half years. Thorough tests and demonstrations were required in addition to the standard qualification program approved by classification societies.
Miko has recently completed a job on the 150,000dwt tanker Solviken off the coast of Santiago in Chile. Two butterfly valves were replaced without having to drydock the vessel. Miko Plaster was safely installed over the seachest grid under Miko’s supervision. As the tanker was not allowed to offload its cargo, the seachest was 14 to 15m below water level. The job was completed in less than 48 hours and was regarded as very successful by the client and approved by the classification society ABS. A similar operation was carried out successfully for the same owners off the French coast a few months later.
Miko Plasters were also for the patching of Highland Faith in New York Harbour, where two specially designed hat shaped Miko Plasters were installed and secured under difficult conditions, allowing the vessel to sail to a repair yard for permanent repairs.
As a direct result of these and other operations, Miko Plaster is now stocked by salvage companies, authorities, navies and shipowners throughout the world.
