AIS Enabled Buoy Launched in Oz
01 Mar 2007
A truly ‘smart’ Sealite buoy was launched last month by Toll Westernport in Westernport Bay, Australia.
Replacing the existing old style steel buoy and incandescent lantern, Sealite’s latest Trident-3000 with SL125 LED AIS-enabled AtoN provides a huge visual and electronic aid for mariners and vessel operators in and around Westernport Bay.
One of the main benefits of the Sealite buoy is the huge visual area of the float section. Each of the four quadrants stands 1.8m high and is rotationally moulded from UV stabilised virgin polyethylene. Once fastened together, this forms an incredibly robust 3m wide float section.
The buoy float also incorporates a tapered base to self-right the buoy in any weather condition, even with no mooring chain attached.
The 316 grade stainless steel tube tower assembly ensures zero corrosion and has superior wind resistance. It attaches to the top of the mooring superstructure and incorporates an access ladder, work platform, safety rail and harness attachment point for complete safety during maintenance operations. The mooring superstructure is also built from 316 grade stainless steel.
Developed in accordance with IALA Recommendations, Sealite’s latest AIS enabled AtoN was mounted at the top of the tower assembly, enabling maintenance personnel to remotely monitor accurate real-time status of their AtoN installation (Message 6), whilst broadcasting crucial Message 21 information to passing vessels with enabled chart and radar screens (as defined by the International Telecommunications Union- ITU).
