Interest in Interceptors Extended in North-East

Safehaven Marine has launched a new Interceptor 42 Workboat version for operator Wave Crookes of Scarborough on the UK’s east coast.

Wave will be operating the ‘Venturer’ as a charter angling / dive vessel from his home port.

This is the third of Safehaven’s craft to this region following John Hutchinsons 42 'Maggie May in Hartlepool and’ Tees Navigator’ in the Port of Teesport. It is probably the highest specification yet on an Interceptor 42 workboat, featuring a 6.5kw generator with a full 240v ring circuit and electric cooker.

Venturer is equipped with Simrad’s Olex system bottom mapping software and hardware including two computers as well as conventional 24nm radar and plotter on Simrad’s cx44 12" screen. Autopilot, bow thruster and trim tabs complete the installation.

Anchoring arrangements are by CJ Capstans gunwale mounted capstain and rollers to bring the rope and chain along the side deck to the aft cockpit, enabling repetitive moorings to be easily and quickly carried out.

The boat is fitted with a Volvo D12 650hp engine powering it to 26 knots on a 10,000kg lightship displacement. The engine is flush mounted with excellent access afforded by the high freeboard and under deck volume. The Volvo D12 is particularly well suited to big single engine installations as it comes as standard with electronic engine controls allowing very precise control, especially useful in close quarter maneuvering.

The newbuild features a  flybridge with repeat engine and steering controls as well as engine instrumentation. This allows panoramic vision when working with divers as well as making docking easier, allowing the helmsman clear vision of all quarters of the vessel.

The owner participated in the making of a rough weather sea keeping video of the boat in gale force conditions with a lumpy sea running and was very impressed. This is a significant endorsement from a man who is an experienced seaman with both Naval experience and as a coxswain on the Scarborough Wavney class lifeboat.

Venturer was subsequently tested by a night crossing from Cork in Ireland in heavy weather and by a five day delivery run along the UK south and east coasts in fairly continuous winds up to 35 knots, force 7-8. However, as the wind was from behind, and because of the Interceptors exceptional ability in following seas, Wave was able to make good speed in relative comfort.

Safehaven Marine has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months, with the Interceptor 42 proving to be the most popular large commercial craft in Ireland. Its reputation will be further enhanced with the pending launch of the new Dublin Pilot boat, based on the same hull. The company also has four Wildcat catamarans on order.
