The vessel ‘Wilkit’is built to Smith’s Tugs’ road transportable Meercat design, provides for a 15m by 6m pontoon size.

The vessel is powered by twin 230hp Doosan/Daewoo main engines, has a carrying capacity of 25 tons and features a 25t/m Effer crane. TW services Ltd provided welding and machine shop facilities whilst stability consultancy was undertaken by Ian Darley.

Although not primarily designed for towing, a bollard pull of 3.25 tons was achieved on test, a respectable figure considering Wilkit’s shallow draft of 800mm. Versatility is built into design concepts which include the ability to be road transported to site and made operational within 20 minutes of launching. There is also a capability to spud down when required, and the capacity to carry liquid cargos of fresh water and fuel.

Classification is to the UK Work Boat Code of Practice category 3. To be based in Southampton, Wilkit will bolster Williams Shipping’s fleet of multicast and pontoons available for charter.

Smith’s Tugs have commenced construction of the next vessel to the same design, which will be available for delivery in October of this year.
