'Molly Malone II' Alive in Argyll
19 Nov 2007
Alnmaritec, which designs and builds aluminium workboats on the North East coast of the UK has recently delivered a new mussel harvesting workboat to a shell fish farm on Loch Etive, in Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland.
The ‘Molly Malone II’ was built for Muckairn Mussels, a company which was originally established in 1985 and has since grown to become one of the region's leading mussel producers. The new boat was purchased by owner Walter Speirs to support increased production on the farm and as a replacement for the original ‘Molly Malone’, which was built by Alnmaritec in 1993 and which has seen nearly 15 years hard service.
The boat is a pontoon catamaran measuring 13m x 5m and is powered by a Beta Marine 90bhp diesel to a single Hamilton 213 waterjet hung in a central pod. The engine also drives the hydraulic system which serves a Palfinger 9000 hydraulic knuckleboom crane specially modified for mussel harvesting and twin davits with hydraulic winches for mussel line handling. The boat has been designed with a completely flush deck for ease of handling and cleaning and is equipped with a powerful deck wash system and hydraulic power points on deck for grading equipment.
Due to restrictions in road width, the boat could not be delivered by road transport to Oban and was therefore launched on the East Coast in Inverness then sailed by the Alnmaritec delivery crew down through the Caledonian Canal to the final destination on the West Coast.
Alnmaritec managing director Chris Millman said, 'Our company was originally founded on building boats for the Scottish aquaculture industry and I am delighted that we have had the opportunity to work with Walter again. Obviously we view it as a great vote of confidence that he has returned to us for his new boat and I hope that she serves him very well.'
