Fairplay XIV is Sold to Greece
19 Nov 2007
Hamburg based Fairplay Towage has sold its deepsea tug 'Fairplay XIV' to Greece. The tug is well known throughout the towage industry, having worked reliably and economically worldwide, with its running mate 'Fairplay IX', for many years.
Fairplay XIV was built 1970 as the 'Seetrans 1' by Schichau-Werft in Bremerhaven and became the 'Raga 1' with Raga Schiffahrts Gmbh of Hamburg in 1975. In 1978 the tug was laid up in Cuxhaven prior to being taken over by Petersen & Alpers to operate as the 'Hanseatic'. Fairplay Towage purchased the tug in 1987 and renamed it Fairplay XIV.
Fairplay XIV’s success was due to its economical fuel consumption, large bunker tanks that enabled it to undertake uninterrupted towage operations of up to 90 - 100 days, and its very good record for reliability.
In the course of its working life with Fairplay, the tug circumnavigated the globe several times. Voyages performed since September 2006 alone are typical of the work it carried out. In September 2006, Fairplay XIV left San Francisco with a tandem tow of two pontoons heading for Las Raffan in the UAE. From there it ran light tug to Nantong, China to commence a tow in mid-January 2007 with a pontoon laden with various inland river barge hulls for Rotterdam, where it arrived at the end of May. The tug then sailed for the Romanian Black Sea port of Tulcea to pick up a new hull for Stavanger in Norway. The next job was to tow an empty pontoon from Stavanger to Escravos, Nigeria, with a pontoon for a local offshore project. In December 2007 the same pontoon will be towed back to Europe by the sister tug Fairplay IX.
After having delivered the pontoon in Nigeria the Fairplay XIV demobilised in Piraeus where it arrived on 29 September. The handover to its new owners Diavlos Maritime took place on 2 November and the tug will in future be operated as the 'Pantadynamos' under the Panamian flag.
