Both new vessels are stationed in the Port of Antwerp. Substantial growth of the port required rapid action on behalf of URS to meet a growing demand for towage services. Union Grizzly and Union Kodiak are the third and fourth vessels in a list of twelve tugs due to be delivered between 2007 and 2010 for the various ports served by the company, in an ambitious new development programme. The compact but powerful tugs 'Union Amber' and 'Union Jade' were introduced in Zeebrugge earlier in the year.

This latest pair of new ASD tugs was constructed in Turkey at the Dearsan shipyard to a design based on the Robert Allan Ltd RAmparts 3200/65 Class. Union Grizzly and Union Kodiak measure 32.32m in length overall,12.2m in breadth and have a draft of 5.36m and gross tonnage 473 grt. Both vessels are operating under the Belgian flag and were built to meet the class requirements of RINA   C+ Hull + Mach, Unrestricted Navigation, AUT-UMS, Escort Tug, Water Spray, Fire-Fighting Ship 1.

Although the vessels were built in Turkey, the main engines are Belgian. The tugs are equipped with two ABC - 8 MDZC eight cylinder diesels generating a total of 5,028 bhp (3,700 kW) at 1,000 rpm to drive two Schottel SRP 1515 CP fully azimuthing propulsion units. The units incorporate controllable pitch propellers obviating the need for slipping clutches and giving precise thrust control.

The deck equipment is from Rolls-Royce/Brattvraag and comprises a combined winch and anchor windlass forward with a single split drum equipped with 200m of 60mm diameter ‘Steelite’ fibre towline. The winch has a maximum line pull at stall of 32 tons and a brake holding load of 175 tons. A similar single drum winch aft carries 1,000m of 52mm diameter steel wire rope for towing over the stern.

Fire fighting equipment includes two long barrel FFS remotely operated monitors of 1,200 m3/hour capacity, one water and the other water/foam. Both are supplied by fire pumps powered by the main engines via Kumera step-up gearboxes. A self protection spray system meets class requirements with a capacity of 300 m3/hour,.

The tugs are fully equipped with an outfit of advanced navigation equipment, including radar, echo sounder, DGPS, compass, electronic mapping and radio communications to meet the requirements of GMDSS sea area A3.

There is fully air conditioned accommodation for a maximum of 10 persons, in two single, two double and one quadruple cabin.
